The Elusive MacGuffin

With The Pink Herring now away at the editors, I started work on the next Shaun Young book today - working title The Elusive MacGuffin. It is set some six months after The Pink Herring and begins with an elderly man arriving on steam train at Sheringham station, the end of the line.

Leonard is lost, confused and standing in the middle of a road blocking traffic from leaving the carpark. When a police officer arrives, all he can say is that he has killed his mother. His only possession is an ancient biscuit tin containing some old Readers Digest books, a girls hair brush, ten worn-out toothbrushes held together with a girls hair bungee, some colouring pencils and a diary. Not a lot to go on, but Shaun Young soon gets to grips with the contents of Leonard's tin, connecting with a man who is not only traumatised but is clearly exhibiting signs of autism.

Where has he come from? What is he doing here? What does he mean when he says he killed his mother? What was the story of his brothers and sisters who had apparently lived out their entire lives with him in a secluded ex-monastery in rural North Norfolk? Let's find out...
